ThoughtLog is a tool for the (re)collection of spontaneous thought. It eschews notes, titles, tags and folders, freeing the cognitive resources otherwise occupied by planning. It augments verbal memory for thoughts that—while worth remembering—are hard to maintain as they enter and exit consciousness quickly, agrammatically, and sometimes in parallel. It has a low interaction cost, taking cues from Notational Velocity. Text-editors are based on the document; ThoughtLog is based on the collection, in this case, of thoughts it automatically separates, sorts, filters and time-stamps, while ever-resetting the point of insertion.

0.4.5-BETA

  • ThoughtLog.json now stores dates in the standard ISO 8601 convention
  • ThoughtLog.json no longer stores the deprecated "type" property
  • Preferences window styling update

0.4.4-ALPHA

  • Now the omnibox goes from unfocused to focused only when typing into an empty thought log
  • Date column is slightly wider
  • Revised HUD copy (i.e., help text)

0.4.3-ALPHA

  • If neither the omnibox nor the table has focus, ThoughtLog will automatically focus the omnibox and submit any keypresses you make
    • This relieves the need to press Command+L in some scenarios. Note that typing while the table is focused will select rows, just as it does in Apple's Finder.
  • Added more window padding and reconfigured the layout of the heads-up display
  • Increased font size to ease reading
  • Changed omnibox text color from white to Solarized Base2

0.4.2-ALPHA

  • Bursts of thoughts are now zebra-striped
    • In skimming old thoughts, one is sometimes looking for a "session" of entries logged in quick succession. Now, thoughts added or edited more than a minute apart are zebra-striped so that they pop-out.
  • The table will now keep your recent entries in view, regardless of sort order
  • Thoughts are now drawn in San Francisco Light, rather than San Francisco Regular
  • Tweaked some colors

0.4.1-ALPHA

  • Removed expiry date
  • Added the ability to change sound effect volume
    • This allows you to choose ThoughtLog's volume independently of your music or other applications' audio.
  • No longer showing help text on tabula rasa if the preference is disabled
  • Resetting all defaults now reloads thoughts from the preferred directory

0.4.0-Alpha

  • Changed layout of the heads-up displays
  • Revised help copy
  • Removed filters
  • Removed archiving
    • Archiving and filtering can pull writers into conventional, utilitarian workflows.
  • Faster load time (noticeable after hundreds of thoughts)
  • Moved date sorting from text command to menu item with keyboard shortcut
    • Press Command+D to toggle sorting.
  • Date column now hidden by default; can be toggled with keyboard shortcut (and remembered)
  • Entering a thought resets the playing of the sound effect

0.3.2-ALPHA

  • Added ability to copy & paste (or drag & drop) to other applications, like Microsoft Word

0.3.1-ALPHA

  • Removed a barely-perceivable lag in playing of the sound effect
  • Revised copy around 'bookmarks' to 'filters'
  • Moved unemphasized row indicator two big pixels to the left

0.3.0-ALPHA

  • Migrated to Swift 3
  • Added the ability undo the editing of a bookmark
  • Added the ability to sort bookmarks by date modified/created
  • Added instruction when in the tabula rasa state
  • Added a (temporary) application icon
  • No longer showing traffic lights at all
    • A minimalistic inevitability given the keyboard-centric nature of the tool
  • Added sound effect on entering new thoughts
    • The sound is the tick from a software-sampled Roland TR-808. It can be toggled in Preferences.

0.2.0-ALPHA

  • Bookmarks pane no longer resizes on entering fullscreen mode
  • Updated color, layout and typography
  • More relaxed search algorithm.
  • Sort thoughts on date modified by typing /md (modified down or newest first) and /mu (modified up or oldest first)

0.1.2-ALPHA

  • Escape now resets omnibox
  • Separated HUDs for common keyboard shortcuts, a "low-resolution" clock, and thought counts
  • Thoughts & bookmarks can be dragged into other applications
  • Bookmarks pane is resizable, animates in/out, and its state is remembered
  • Traffic lights and cursor now show only when you move the mouse
  • Larger click area for omnibox
  • Help redirects to website

0.1.1-ALPHA

  • Thoughts & bookmarks can be copied and pasted into other applications
  • Bookmarks are now editable
  • ⌘+F now mimics ⌘+L
  • Modified column is now right-aligned
  • Added a "low-resolution" clock that rounds to the nearest hour
  • Added Solarized colors
